Although this may change in the future, the NTRN Project currently focuses solely on nonprofit colleges. In the nonprofit context, NTR simply covers expenditures when non-tuition revenue falls short.

At for-profit institutions, profits enter the equation alongside expenditures and non-tuition revenue is typically minimal. If more tuition dollars are collected, it doesn’t necessarily lead to increased spending. Instead, those dollars may simply boost the profits paid out to the institution’s owners.

This shifts the nature of the dilemma. In addition to weighing access, affordability, and educational quality, for-profit college leaders must also prioritize profit-making—not just financial sustainability.
